Things to Do in Corolla & Currituck County
Currituck County runs from Corolla's beaches at the top of the Outer Banks, across the sound, to the farms, vineyards and small towns of the mainland. ๐
See the wild horses ๐
Wild Colonial Spanish mustangs roam the beaches north of Corolla. Book a guided 4x4 tour or visit the Corolla Wild Horse Fund to learn about the herd, and always stay at least 50 feet away.
Climb the lighthouse ๐ผ
The Currituck Beach Lighthouse was finished in 1875 and never painted, so its red brick shows. It's open for climbing in the warmer months.
Tour Whalehead ๐๏ธ
Whalehead is a 1920s Art Nouveau mansion on the sound in Currituck Heritage Park, next to the lighthouse. The park is also home to the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education.
Head to the mainland ๐
Sanctuary Vineyards in Jarvisburg pours local wine, H2OBX Waterpark in Powells Point keeps the kids busy, and farm stands line Route 158 in summer.
Get outside ๐ฆ
Ride the free ferry to Knotts Island for Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge, or paddle the quiet backwaters of Currituck Sound.
Mark your calendar ๐
Summer is Corolla's busy season for outdoor concerts and Fourth of July celebrations, and the Currituck County Extension office in Barco runs classes and workshops all year.
