Things to Do in Edenton & Chowan County

Edenton was North Carolina's first colonial capital, and its historic downtown still sits right on Edenton Bay, where the Chowan River meets the Albemarle Sound. ⛵

Walk the waterfront ⚓

Start at the Penelope Barker House Welcome Center, then stroll the town docks and Queen Anne Park along Edenton Bay.

Visit the lighthouse 🗼

The Roanoke River Lighthouse, an 1886 screw-pile lighthouse that once stood at the mouth of the Roanoke River, now sits on the Edenton waterfront and is open for tours.

Dig into history 🏛️

The 1767 Chowan County Courthouse is a National Historic Landmark. In 1774, 51 women signed the Edenton Tea Party resolution, one of the earliest political acts by women in the colonies.

Get outside 🌲

Paddle among the cypress trees at Bennett's Millpond, or visit the Edenton National Fish Hatchery for its free aquarium and nature trail.

Shop and eat 🍽️

Broad Street is lined with locally owned shops, cafes and restaurants, a short walk from the water.

Mark your calendar 🎉

Fall brings Shrimp by the Bay, summer brings Fourth of July fireworks over Edenton Bay, and December fills downtown with holiday events.
