Things to Do in Columbia & Tyrrell County

Columbia sits on the Scuppernong River in Tyrrell County, the least populous county in North Carolina and one of its wildest. About a third of the county is water. ๐ŸŒฟ

Walk the boardwalk ๐ŸŒฒ

The Scuppernong River Interpretive Boardwalk is a 0.75-mile loop through cypress swamp along the river, starting behind the wildlife refuge visitor center on US 64.

See the wild side ๐Ÿป

Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge has its visitor center, the Walter B. Jones, Sr. Center for the Sounds, right in Columbia. Winter brings huge flocks of ducks, geese and swans, and black bears can be seen most of the year.

Meet the red wolves ๐Ÿบ

The Red Wolf Center, about a mile south of town on NC 94, has a viewing area for a pair of red wolves. Programs depend on staffing, so call ahead.

Make something ๐ŸŽจ

Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft runs hands-on workshops, from copper jewelry to weaving, and many of them land on the calendar below.
